Tech for good. Technology Transfer, Global Foresight and Sustainable Innovation in Knowledge Ecosystems (39th cycle)
Date of publication of the call: 2 october 2023
Language of the Course: English
Duration: 3 years
Description and objectives
The increasingly pervasive use of information and knowledge technologies is altering the rules of post-modern competition, causing a complex transformation of society, business, universities, industry and competitive environments.
The sharp increase of disruptive technological change introduced by start-ups and innovative small and medium-sized enterprises, whose ambidexterity has completely changed the rules of Research and Development processes, is pushing all economic, social and institutional actors to develop dynamic capacities capable of supporting the processes of exploration and application of new knowledge, solutions and technologies. To this must be added the need to respond effectively to increasingly complex and diverse social needs. The growing demands of stakeholders, in particular, have generated an awareness that a competitive model based solely on maximising production capacity and reducing costs can only generate a temporary advantage.
As emphasised in the Fair and Sustainable Well-Being (Bes) Framework promoted by ISTAT and also considered in the Economic and Financial Documents following the approval of Law 163/2016, research and innovation are an indirect determinant of well-being and are the basis of social and economic progress. Accordingly, recalling the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the sustainable management of Research and Development processes and, in particular, technology transfer, can be the main driver of change, giving rise to a new managerial and social paradigm defined in the literature as "Sustainable Innovation."
Starting from this premise, the PhD aims to explore a central theme represented by the innovation-sustainability combination, understood as a multidimensional expression of interconnected phenomena and intrinsically open to multidisciplinary approaches.
For this purpose, the course aims to promote an innovative, international and interdisciplinary course of basic and applied training and research on sustainable innovation management and optimisation of technology and knowledge transfer processes between universities, companies, institutions and non-profit organisations.
The multidisciplinary nature of the course, ensured by the expertise of professors and researchers belonging to different SSDs, guarantees an adequate approach to the subject, which can be approached from multiple points of view, as identified in the various lines of research that the PhD programme proposes.
The areas of research promoted include aspects of management, corporate finance, statistics, private law, business economics, sociology, political philosophy, computer engineering and management, as well as bio-medical elements relating to the quality of life and the psycho-physical well-being of people.
In particular, five main lines of research are identified:
Research line 1| Innovation Management in Knowledge ecosystems;
Research line 2| Sustainable innovation impact assessment
Research line 3| Research and Development, Technology transfer and Foresight;
Research line 4| Collaborative platforms for Sustainability Innovation;
Research line 5| Sustainable Innovation Governance and Local Economic Development.
Career Opportunities
The aim of the research doctorate is to provide knowledge and skills required to carry out activity of basic and applied research even in the academic sphere, as well as highly professional activities in companies and public or private national and international structures/bodies/centres dealing with aspects of innovation management, sustainability, technology transfer in the fields of economics and statistics, political and social sciences, legal sciences and industrial and information engineering.
Thanks to its interdisciplinary character, the doctorate enables the acquisition of scientific and specialistic knowledge; also providing the possibility of a research experience abroad, supported by the presence of foreign teachers.
The education results in an adequate scientific production.
