Giovanni Camardese is a Medical Surgeon (1997, 110/110 with honors), Specialist in Psychiatry (2001, 50/50 with honors) and Psychotherapist (2001). He is currently Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Link Campus University in Rome.
Previously (since 2004), he held the position of confirmed university researcher in Psychiatry at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, where he acted as Aggregate Professor of Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychopharmacology within degree courses at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, at the School of Specialisation in Psychiatry, as well as at postgraduate courses and university masters. Since 2004 he has also acted as medical director at the Day Hospital of Clinical Psychiatry at the Policlinico "A. Gemelli" in Rome. Since November 2005 he has been in charge of the Depressive Disorders Area in which he coordinates both the therapeutic projects of the patients treated (more than 13000 in the last 20 years) and the research activity inherent to this field. In 2015, he created the Area of Psychogastroenterology for which he is responsible at the Centre for Diseases of the Digestive System. He is still a contract medical director at the U.O.C. of Clinical and Emergency Psychiatry at the University Polyclinic Foundation "A. Gemelli" IRCCS in Rome.
His research activity is mostly focused on the study of the neurobiology of mood disorders (in particular dopaminergic synapse imaging, alterations in neuroendocrine and immune-inflammatory responses and modifications of the microbiota-intestine-brain axis) and correlations with different psychopathological profiles. Furthermore, he has also been involved in the development of customized treatment and psychiatric rehabilitation protocols for patients suffering from mood, anxiety and pathological addiction disorders in Day Hospital settings, as well as the use of chronotherapies (light therapy, in particular) for the treatment of depression. He has participated in several funded research projects and has been co-investigator in several Phase IV and Phase II pharmacological research protocols.
He acted as speaker at several national and international conferences. His scientific activity has resulted in the production of more than 150 publications with national and international circulation, as well as the editing of a book on the rehabilitation of mood disorders.
