Dr. Marco Feligioni, holds the position of Tenure Track Researcher in BIO/14 Pharmacology at the Department of Life Sciences, Health and Health Professions at Link Campus University in Rome.
In 1999, he graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Genoa, Italy, and then obtained his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2005 doing half of his doctorate at the University of Bristol (UK). During his PhD he worked on the mechanisms of somatostatin release in synaptosomes and also worked on presynaptic trafficking of NMDA and AMPA receptors in stimulated synaptosomes.
He then continued his research as a Post Doc at the University of Bristol (UK) until 2008, when he began his work on synaptic SUMOylation, and discovered that it has a role of its own in glutamate release. Successsively, he continued his post-doctoral research at the Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet University, Stockholm (Sweden) until late 2009. In Sweden he continued to work on SUMOylation by studying its role on the neurotrophin receptor protein NTR-P75.
In 2010, he was a researcher at the “Mario Negri” Institute in Milan for 2 years studying the role of SUMOylation in induced cell death and its interaction with JNKs proteins.
In 2012, he moved to the EBRI Research Institute in Rome where he has been Group Leader since 2016 to date and has continued his work on SUMOylation by studying its role on protein aggregation and then studying this mechanism in different neurodegenerative disease areas such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and lately in Ataxia.
For the past few years, he has also been working on retinal neurodegeneration and neuroprotection in diseases such as Glaucoma and AMD.
He collaborates with various research groups both at a national and international level.
He is the winner of several national and international Grants both as Principal Investigator and Collaborator.
