Prof. Carai is a pediatric neurosurgeon specializing in neuro-oncology and microsurgery, with a strong passion for innovation and clinical research. His main interests include advanced solutions for intraoperative visualization, the integration of virtual reality and simulation into clinical practice, and the reduction of neurosurgical morbidity to improve the quality of life of pediatric patients.
He graduated in Medicine at the University of Sassari in 2002, completing his Specialization School in Neurosurgery in 2007 and his PhD in Biomedical Sciences with a focus on the nervous system in 2011.
He gained international experience as a research fellow in 2009 and visiting professor in 2012 at the Department of Neurosurgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
In 2018, he attained a Master in Pediatric Neurology and in 2020 he attained a Master in Management and Administration of Healthcare Facilities.
Since July 2025, he has been Director of the Complex Operative Unit of Neurosurgery at the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome.
He authored over 140 publications in indexed international journals (H-index 24), he is a member of the Board of Directors and Coordinator of the neurosurgical working group of the Posterior Fossa Society. He is also a member of the brain tumor group of the European Society for Pediatric Oncology (SIOPe), where he serves as Co-Chair of the working group on craniopharyngioma.
OFFICE HOURS
The professor is available to receive the students at the end of the lessons. However, the students may also request an appointment by email.
