Andrea Ragusa attained a Bachelor's Degree in Organic Chemistry in 2001 at the University of Parma and a Ph.D. in Supramolecular Chemistry in 2005 at Southampton University (UK) under the supervision of Prof. J.D. Kilburn. Title “Synthetic Receptors for Chiral Recognition of Carboxylates”, project Marie Curie young researcher – EU project FP7: CHIRAL RECOGNITION, HPRN-CT-2001-00182.
Between 2005 and 2006 he was Marie Curie researcher at IIQ (Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas) of CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) in Siviglia (ES). Projects Marie Curie research fellow – EU project FP7: CARBONA, HPRN-CT-2002-00190 e Marie Curie research fellow – EU project FP7: GLYCOGOLD, MRTN-CT-2004-005645.
After returning to Italy, he worked on several research projects first at the NNL (National Nanotechnology Laboratory), then at IIT (Italian Institute of Technology) and finally at the University of Salento (Lecce), where, from 2018 to 2024, he also served as professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (for the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology) and Applied Pharmaceutical Chemistry (for the Master's Degree in Medical Biotechnology and Nanotechnology). He has also supervised various Final Dissertations for Bachelor's and Master's Degree graduates.
Currently, he is Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (SSD Chim/08) at Link Campus University (Rome).
His research interests range from the extraction and characterization of bioactive molecules from naturally occurring matrices, the design and study of new enzyme inhibitors and chemotherapeutic drugs, to the study of new tumor markers and development of early diagnostic methods.
