Leonardo Stella is a surgeon (Degree in Medicine and Surgery, University of Florence, 2016, 110/110 with honors), specialist in Internal Medicine (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, 2022, 50/50 with honours) and PhD in Internal Medicine and Hepatology (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, 2025). He is currently a researcher at Link Campus University in Rome and a senior internist and hepatologist at the Hepatology Unit of the IRCCS Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli IRCCS in Rome.

He also carried out clinical and research activities in the field of hepatology at the Hôpital Beaujon (Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris), with particular interest in the integrated management of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and liver cirrhosis. He is a member of the Multidisciplinary Gemelli Hepatocellular Carcinoma Tumour Board and the ARTE and ITA.LI.CA research groups.

His research activity is focused on the pathophysiological, clinical and prognostic mechanisms of hepatocellular carcinoma and liver cirrhosis, with particular attention to cirrhosis decompensation and immunotherapy treatment in cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. He also studies the intestinal microbiota in liver diseases and its implications in disease progression and therapeutic response.

He authored 35 scientific publications indexed on Scopus and participated as a speaker at several national and international conferences (EASL, AISF, UEG, FADOI, SIMI). He is an active member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF).
