Massimiliano Coviello is associate professor of film and television (L-ART/06) at LINK University, where he is part of the degree program "Massimiliano Coviello is an associate professor of film and television (L-ART/06) at LINK University, where he is part of the degree program "DAMS - Audiovisual and Theatre Production. Disciplines of Arts, Music and Entertainment." At the same University, he is a member of the Link LAB (Laboratory for Social Research) and the Quality Assurance Committee.
In 2012, he attained a doctorate in "Visual Representation Studies" at the Italian Institute of Human Sciences (now the Institute of Human and Social Sciences, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa). In 2013, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Siena. From 2019 to 2021, he was a research fellow at the University of LINK Studies.
His research activity is mainly related to media languages, especially from the perspective of narrative and the analysis of forms of representation, with a focus on cinema and fiction seriality. He carried out various researches on the relationship between trauma, cultural memory and media narratives, on representations of migration phenomena in the history of Italian cinema, and on the construction of communities and imaginaries through contemporary television seriality.
His resarch activity was always complemented with teaching and dissemination activities. He organizes courses and seminars on cinema and media at a number of Italian universities, art academies, Higher Institutes for Artistic Industries, and secondary schools.
For various years, he coordinated and collaborated with the editorial boards of scientific, cultural and critical journals, including: “Fata Morgana. Quadrimestrale di cinema e visioni”, “K. Revue trans-européenne de philosophie et arts”, “Visual Ethnography”, “Carte Semiotiche. Rivista Internazionale di Semiotica e Teoria dell'Immagine”, “Fata Morgana Web”, “Segnocinema. Bimestrale di teoria e critica del cinema”, “il lavoro culturale”.
He has participated in various nationally and European funded research projects on issues related to participatory processes, performing arts, audiovisual and popular culture. He is currently in charge of LINK's research unit for the project “WokeIt. Investigating Representation, Inclusivity and Social Responsibility in Rai’s Fiction Audiovisual Productions (2015-2022)” Call PRIN 2022 PNRR.
