It is a constitutional, democratic, European, and international concept of security: the protection of individuals and their freedoms, the safeguarding of institutions, risk prevention, crisis management, the defense of networks, data, and infrastructure, and the preservation of ecosystems, supply chains, strategic assets, and the continuity of essential services.
From this perspective, Defense and Security Sciences is a course designed for students, professionals, and public and private sector practitioners who wish to acquire a solid framework for understanding the new challenges related to the protection, resilience, and security of the nation-state.
An Integrated Training Program
Contemporary security cannot be understood through a single discipline. A cyber crisis is also a legal, organizational, economic, and reputational issue; an environmental crisis is also a social, infrastructural, and administrative crisis; a vulnerability in transportation networks or energy supply chains involves territory, technology, economics, law, logistics, and national security.
For this reason, the program integrates public, administrative, criminal, comparative, and European law with the sociology of security, psychology, neuroscience, contemporary history, geoeconomics, intelligence, cybersecurity, security technologies, business organization, auditing, compliance, infrastructure regulation, economic and financial security, and international relations.
The curriculum enables students to develop a common language that bridges legal, technical, organizational, and strategic knowledge, fostering skills essential for engaging with institutions, government agencies, businesses, essential service providers, and entities responsible for protecting collective interests.
The Course’s Strategic Areas
The training program is structured around five major areas of security: personal security; institutional security; territorial, infrastructure, and ecosystem security; intelligence and information security; and technological, digital, and economic-industrial security.
These areas enable the exploration of key topics such as civil protection, emergency law, territorial security, cybersecurity, socio-strategic analysis, intelligence methodologies, geoeconomics and national security, audit and compliance, Golden Power, critical infrastructure, data, platforms, supply chains, artificial intelligence, and the resilience of production systems.
Links with the Institutional and Operational Sectors
One of the defining features of the program is its connection with institutions, government agencies, state bodies, representative associations, essential service providers, the business sector, and professional organizations active in various fields of defense, security, protection, and resilience.
Dialogue with industry stakeholders has confirmed the relevance of this three-year program and the need for skills that integrate legal, economic, technological, organizational, geopolitical, and operational dimensions. Academic training is therefore designed to be responsive to the country’s real needs, including through internships, opportunities for dialogue, and pathways that integrate classroom learning with professional contexts.
MODALITY OF FRUITION
The course provides for non-compulsory attendance of lessons. Furthermore, in order to meet the diverse needs of students, the lessons are video-recorded and made available on digital platforms in asynchronous mode. This additional opportunity allows students to organize their study and revision times independently. Theoretical teaching is complemented by practical and professionalizing activities: workshops, internships and visits to companies, public bodies and institutions in the area. These field experiences make it possible to develop concrete operational skills and to come into direct contact with the world of work already during the course of study.

Internal and External Security (in Italian)
Upon completion of the Degree Course in Defense and Security Sciences, the candidates can pursue careers in a variety of fields, subject to the selection procedures, admission requirements, and training programs specific to each government agency or organization.
In the public sector, this program provides a useful foundation for those who wish to work or advance their careers in the Armed Forces, law enforcement, Civil Protection, the Fire Department, local police, local government agencies, central and regional administrations, and national, European, and international organizations involved in security, cooperation, and crisis management.
In the private sector, the course prepares students for careers in corporate security, risk management, consulting, data protection, cybersecurity, infrastructure security, logistics, airports, major events, strategic enterprises, banks, essential service providers, foundations, think tanks, and organizations involved in threat assessment, risk prevention, and the protection of economic, technological, and information assets.
Furthermore, the course enables the candidates to continue their studies toward master’s degrees, specialization courses, and advanced training programs in the fields of global security, international relations, intelligence, international law, cybersecurity, risk management, infrastructure protection, and economic and financial security.

TUTORING
The course supports students through 4 different types of tutoring:
- Orientation and transversal tutoring, carried out by Education Coordinators, aimed at supporting the students in the reception phase, introducing them into the university life, monitoring their learning pathway, motiving them throughout the course (with special reference to the planned results), supporting them in bureaucratic procedures, the latter in collaboration with the Student Administration Office;
- international tutoring, carried out by the International Office, which wil offer personalized assistance to both international students enrolled in the degree course and Erasmus students;
- didactic tutoring, provided by the didactic support staff (teaching assistants, doctoral students, holders of supplementary teaching contracts, etc.), who will support the students with supplementary teaching activities related to the specific subjects of the learning pathways;
- specialized tutoring, carried out by Education Coordination for inclusion, aimed at students with disabilities or specific learning disorders and special educational needs, aimed at reducing the obstacles that might prevent their full integration in the academic environment.
