Cosimo Annese is an Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry (CHIM/06) at Link Campus University in Rome. Since 2024, he has been a fixed-term 3rd level researcher at the Institute of Chemistry of OrganoMetallic Compounds (ICCOM) of the National Research Council (CNR) in Bari, working on the research program PE00000004 “Made in Italy Circolare e Sostenibile - MICS” - Task 3.3.2. “Plant-based materials: design and synthesis from renewable, non-edible biomass residues”.
After receiving his PhD degree in Chemical Sciences from Università degli Studi di Bari in 2009, he was a research fellow at the same University and at the CNR for seven years. Since then, he has been co-advisor for several bachelor’s and master’s degree theses and teaching assistant for organic chemistry courses. From 2017 to 2023 he also taught chemistry and chemical technologies in several high schools.
In 2008 he moved to the Department of Chemistry of Brown University (Providence, RI, USA), working as a visiting scientist in the group of Prof. Paul G. Williard, where he improved his skills in the structural elucidation of organic compounds by advanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques.
He has been involved in several national and international grants and from 2014 to 2016 he was the Italian partner coordinator for an international agreement of cooperation between the Institute of Chemistry of Organometallic Compounds (CNR-ICCOM, Bari, Italy) and the Regents of the University of California (Irvine, USA) within the NSF research program: “Preparation of pores featuring ion current rectification and selectivity towards potassium ions”.
His research interests include the development of catalytic methods for the eco-friendly oxidations in organic synthesis, development of green synthetic procedures for organic compounds of pharmaceutical interest, drug delivery, conversion of biomass into commodity chemicals and fuels.
